When doing a Texas M Friday Intensity Workout building up to 1RM,

- Should one simply build up to a 1 RM personal best ?

- Or build up to a 1 RM and do several in a row with breaks ? (In that case how many ?)

And is it appropriate to do a backoff set or two at lower weights ?

If you build up to a 1RM PR, you haven't gotten a lot of work volume done that day, certainly not the intention of the program. If the rep is a true 1RM, how can you do it for singles across? Get the book.

I've read the intermediate chapter in PP 10 times, guess I'm just not that bright..

So if I get this right now then:

A Friday TM intensity 1RM-workout should look like this:

Build to 1 RM in increments
Backoff set(s)

The TM Friday workout does not call for a 1RM.

The TM Friday workout does not call for a 1RM.

So, to clarify, a more appropriate way would be to do heavy singles?

Clearly not a 1RM, but more along the lines of 90-95% of your 1RM, and do several of them?

Read the fucking book.

Read the fucking book.

Oh, okay. So you don't suggest any variation for squats on the 5RM for Fridays, unlike the press/push press example?

Rip,
You might be the only person I know who is funnier on the internet than in person.

Coach, he obviously understands the program better than you. Time to let go.

Just because someone can read on the internet doesn't mean they can read a book. Oh, wait, yes it does.

Okay dude,

On the last day of the week you are supposed to work up to a 3RM or 5RM or whatever is sensible. In fact, Rip recommenrds cycling through the various RM's (1 RM, 3RM, 5RM).
Think of the texas method as this:
Stress, Rest, Test.
Monday is the stress day; Wednesday is the rest day, and Friday is the test day. The point of working up to a max set (only ONE SET) is to test your new progress, it is not intended to be another stressfull workout that requires much recovery.

Hey coach I think some of the confusion is coming from page 183, the sentence right before the 2nd paragraph "The third day should be an attempt at a personal record".

Obviously this was talking about Push Press example and you also mention cycling through going for 1RM,2RM and 3 RM for friday workouts on a week-by-week basis.

Not trying to stir the pot or anything just trying to show why I think there is confusion by bolla and mstro.

I humbly apologize and promise never, ever to do a 1RM again.

There are, however, different ways of trying to combine strength science and humor. Here is a british higbrow one:

It is indeed amusing that The Economist thinks that Putin has big muscles.
