Rip-in an attempt to be like Macgyver-esque, what would you think about microloading with a role of duct tape? I believe one roll weighs 1.75 lbs.

That was a TV show, right? I like Battlestar Galactica.

I use velcro wrist weights. The pair weigh 1kg and slide nicely onto the ends of a barbell. Plus there's the added bonus of turning something otherwise useless into something useful.

I microload with pieces of meat, which I then consume after the workout.

Hopefully you're talking about the old Battlestar Galactica...when I was a fat little kid, I was mesmerizied by a hot blond named Casseopea & wanted to give her my thrusters real bad.

I don't remember where I heard of it, but warm-up rings for baseball bats work GREAT for microloading. I got a couple of 16 oz. rings and a couple of 24 oz. rings. They're the perfect size to go on the bar. Here's a link in case you didn't grow up playing baseball: 24 oz. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00196SOFM) and 16 oz. I took the advice from the Madcow geosites page and used 6 links of 5/16" chain closed with a spring link clip.
This amounts to a weight of 12 ounces (3/4 lbs) and it fits snugly over the end of an Olympic bar, and it's cheap.
I don't know about you but I ain't paying no $50 for no tiny plates.

Come on guys, it's like $30 for some microplates. That's a drop in the bucket compared to how long you'll use them...and nothing compared to how much food you eat to facilitate your lifting.
$30 for 30 years of convenient plates exactly measured?

I got a pair of Ivanko 1.25lb plates off their website for about ten bucks shipped (actually, I bought ten and gave them out to friends who needed to learn how to microload). Much easier to haul around than 2.5lbs of steak, if not as tasty.
At this point, I haven't needed weight amounts smaller than 2.5lbs total to continue progress. Not sure if the exact Ivankos I picked up are still available (they were scratch and dent, supposedly), but it's worth calling them and seeing what they have. There are several other places online with 1.25lb plates for decent prices, if you look around.

Just to add to the list, I use a couple of 1lb plates artisinally crafted from from pennies and duct tape. Now I don't have to worry about not being able to find an extra pair of clips on a busy evening at the gym.
