View Full Version : Alternative to Cleans? Foot problems.

I am 51 and started your program several weeks ago. I never lifted until then.
Because they started aggravating the arthritis in my feet my doctor advised me to stop doing power cleans.
If I read your book correctly bent-over rows would be a good substitution.
Am I correct in what I read?
If so should I follow the same set and rep scheme as the power clean (5x3) or go with 3x5.
I did like doing the power clean. Is there another lift I can perform that is similar but without the jumping.
Also is there any other advice you can offer a 51 year old newbie. I have your books and DVD and attempting to digest all the information.
Thanks for your help.

Where does my book say that rows are a substitute for cleans? And what kind of shoes are you wearing when you clean?

Maybe I misunderstood what you said on page 289 when you said barbell rows were not a terrible substitution for power cleans. You were talking about gyms without bumper plates. I just applied it to my situation. I apologize if I mistook what you said. I am just looking for a good alternative.
I assume I can't clean without the jump.
The shoe I lift in are New Balance 926 suggested by my doctor to help with motion control. They are pretting solid and well built shoes.
My feet swelled and hurt everytine I did the cleans. I had someone at the gym checking out my form and according to them it was correct.
I also have arthritis creeping into my knees. Another reason I wanted to start lifting and get in shape.
I want to continue the program, I am just looking for some advice.

Okay, you found that in the programming section. Jesus, I wish I'd never said that. I thought I was clear, but everybody has interpreted this to mean that rows are okay instead of cleans. You're old enough that if you don't want to clean, don't clean. But I'll bet you $50 that your problem is the squishy shoes that you doctor doesn't know enough about to even introduce as a topic of conversation. Motion control means during running, not cleans. Get some weightlifting shoes.

I would prefer to do the cleans. You have any good recommendations for shoes. I am not worried about cost.

Do they have the new shoes yet?
It's gotta be the shoes!

Bill sent me an e-mail yesterday that said he was not satisfied with how the shoes look. I told him, "I just don't think they are that goofy. But fuck, I can recommend the things. I've been training in them and they work so well I'm having my old Safes lowered to the same heel height."
So you guys e-mail him and tell him you'll buy the damn things like they are now. Trust me.

I just emailed Bill telling him exactly that. I've been looking to replace my chucks for a long time now. Hopefully he'll be willing to sell these regardless of how they look.

Got a response back from Bill, he told me to go ahead and let the forum know.
He ended up buying the order of shoes. They will be selling a limited run on the site in the next 3-4 weeks to test the market.

Are these shoes a new line from Rogue that you are speaking of? If so can I get more info on them? I am in the market for some and I was getting ready to purchase the pair for $109. If they are coming out with new, better ones I'm willing to wait a week or two. Also are they true to size?
