Rip,

Here's my friend who I have been coaching for the past couple of months. Since he my first coachee, I want to make sure I am not screwing him up for the rest of his life. The lifts look solid to me, but I'd like your confirmation.

The clips run back to back in a since video - squats, then presses, then deadlifts.

My only comment would be that he cuts his depth short on the first three squats. His dead weight is very light, but he has had a back injury so we are taking it slow. As you can see the weight isn't heavy for him so I think it's more of a mental limitation than a physical one. As long as we can make steady progress he'll be fine in the long run.

Yes, I have talked to him about getting some real shoes.

Thanks!

Matt

His squat is very slow at what should be the rebound, press looks fine, deadlift looks fine. My primary advice for all three lifts: get used to checking your trainee's eye gaze direction.

Might the lack of a quick rebound at the bottom of the squat have something to do with the fact the trainee is wearing running shoes? or does that only affect the concentric phase?

Thanks for the input. I didn't even consider the bounce out of the hole aspect of the squat. His major issue with squatting was cutting them short so I have been on him about it. It seems like he has gotten into the habit of feeling around for the bottom. I don't think this will be too difficult to fix.

I will also pay attention to eye position. I just found out today that he has been trying to check his depth on the squat by looking at the reflection in the window. That explains why his head is up and also why his depth is inconsistent. That should be easy to fix also. I'll just give him something to look at.

The shitty shoes aren't helping, true, but it's more than just the shoes.

Rip,

I was wondering if you could look at my squat form and let me know if I'm also slow out of the hole. Any other input is appreciated as well.

I also have my deadlift on this video and I was wondering if the rounding I see is bad enough to need a correction or not. Once again, any other input about that lift is appreciated.

Thanks again,

Shoving your knees out at the bottom will make your bounce tighter. And I see no attempt to squeeze the chest up before you pull.
