Has anyone had a squat rack made to the specs that Rip posted? How much should this cost? I have had two quotes by local welders here in Boston. . . one was $700 and one was $1200. Thoughts? (I know f*ck about this stuff.)

It's good to not live in the northeast.

Rip says it should be ~$500.

You need to shop around for welders. Were they supplying the steel too?

Yes, the estimates were for materials and labor. Other than craigslist, any suggestions on where to "shop around?"

Much obliged,

A friend of mine in Monticello NY built mine from the pictures in SS before Rip posted the specs and it is very close to what is drawn. I sent him the drawings when they were posted. I will ask him if he would do another. It might be cheaper if there were more than 1 he could make at a time.

He is a custom fabricator who does very good work.

Shop around. They are fucking you, or think they're just the best thing since CFS. I've worked closely with a fab shop before and that's bullshit.

One of my customers is making me one. He got such a chuckle from the notes, that he's making it FOR FREE.

Stupid questions -- do the plans as posted include. . .
1. safety bars?
2. a pullup bar across the top?

3. and what is the plywood for?

Are these funny notes in the .zip?

Also wondering why Rip's Racks have safety pins at an angle?

I got Ironmind Squat racks, Pillars of power, an Oly bar, 200lbs bumper plates and a dip attachment for the squat racks for $600 on the Cro$$fit forum from a guy that stopped drinking the Kool Aid. My advice is to keep on looking and searching and something will come up eventually.

Usually I would agree with this advice, given that I got my bumpers, my Eleiko bar, and my C2 from Craigslist. But at this point I need a *good* squat rack and 99.9% of the stuff I see is garbage.

I did a lot research on power racks while looking and came up with this:

elitefts.com - great equipment, but a little pricey. Can probably get a good rack shipped for a little less than $1000

legendfitness.com - good stuff, best to email or call them directly to try and get a deal/quote

york - call and try to get the crossfit discount

ironmind - great squat rack and pillars, a little pricey

Before I came across what I got I was saving up for an elitefts rack. They do a lot for powerlifting and wanted to support them.

Might also try a couple of the larger forums and post a "wanted: power rack" thread.

Anybody have this Body-Solid Pro Power Rack?

Price seems right for $600.

(Cheapest quote I can get for Rip's specs is $700)

That body solid one seems expensive to me.

I am also sure you can find a MUCH better price than $700 for building Rip's rack.

The key is to find a workshop who is very used to doing these small one-off fabrications.

I've tried Craigslist, local paper, etc. Where can I find one? Getting frustrating.

I dont know about the USA as I am not from there. I do not know what kind of industries and fabricators may be in your city.

But I do know that you americans like custom cars and motorcycles, maybe try looking for those kind of people.

Things in the UK are generally much more expensive than the USA. Weightlifting is less popular here too, so the equipment is harder to find.

Yet I found these squat stands right away for £108 / $170, they look really good too.

http://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/bodymax-cf415-squat-and-dip-rack-with-spotter-catchers.php

Or this power rack for £220 / $350

http://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/bodymax-cf375-power-rack.php

So $600 in the USA seems a bit expensive.

This one looks identical to the body solid one and is just $258

it comes with 10year in home warranty so must be decent.
