I am a novice SS lifter. I have the Captains of Crush trainer, and a number one. How do you all combine gripper training with SS? What do your workout schedules look like?

Thanks.

I'm gonna try this: 3x5 on Monday night and Friday night. I DL on those days, normal grip on warm up sets, hook grip on work sets. (I'll wait 6+ hours after DLing before doing CoC-training.)

Going to add the CoC-training slowly just to make sure it doesn't interefere with SS and so I don't get overtrained/injured. Planning on 1x5 on Monday and Friday, 2x5 next week, 3x5 the week after that.

As with any type of training, you first must know and understand why you're doing it in the first place. You've read SS and hopefully PP so you know what I mean. Why do you want to start training your grip? If you're looking to get better at closing grippers, then you're on the right track with gripper training, obviously. If you're looking for overall grip strength (particularly that which will help your deadlift), you need a more rounded routine. Grippers will do nothing for most types of grip, because they neglect the thumb. I'd highly recommend adding in pinch and fat bar holds and lifts to your program. If you don't have a fat bar, buy some Fat Gripz or wrap a towel around the bar. An easy way to do it would be do pinch grips on Monday and fat bar holds on Friday, or whatever two days you like. You can work the grippers in there too, but don't think that's all you have to do to improve grip strength.

I'd highly recommend reading Mastery of Hand Strength by John Brookfield if you're interested in a strong grip.

My goal is to have a stronger grip for MMA/judo grabbing and pulling. I have the Brookfield book, but I have not looked at it in a while. I am just wondering how people are working in grip training with SS. I don't want my basic lifting to suffer as I have made good improvements on Rip's program.
