New log because I don't want to be with the commoners in "General Training" or whatever.

Kit whoring will be sadly absent for the first few months although I do occasionally play with my double ply shirt for no reason than to see if I've got any better at using it by never training it (I never do). I might do this next time I have a training partner actually.

Anyway today gets the new log off to a corking start. Compared to the crap that went on in the old one at least.

Rows:
110 x 8
110 x 8
198 x 8
198 x 8
242 x 8
242 x 8

Deadlifts:
belt on
308 x 1
396 x 1
440 x 4

440 x 4 is not bad considering I did rows and training of late has been hilariously bad. Probably a personal best of some kind since I remember doing the same weight for two doubles when I was training for a September meet (in which I pulled it for a single :()

what's your programming like? ie, TX method, advanced programming, etc.

George Noble
01-09-2010, 08:04 PM
My programming at the moment is go to the gym, have fun then go home and get fat, all the while making sure I get lots of deadlift and bench work in.

Normally my programming is a bit more involved. For my deadlift* I did an eight week cycle of light weights off the floor adding weight each week and ending up doing a fast triple with 180 kg the week before the meet. That was speed work, and after that I did rack pulls and then rows from the floor. Then abs. Squat day (once a week) was 4 weeks of 5s raw, then 2 weeks of 2s straps down, then 2 weeks of 2s straps up. My squat on the day was a disaster but I think I should have been able to handle 300 kg. Bench I did once a week and just worked in my shirt to various boards, making sure to get enough volume in which has been a mistake in the past.

My off seasons never last long enough to really get my teeth into a program so I tend to just do what I'm doing now - have fun, hit the lifts hard, deload when I need to and eat. That's the price I'm paying for whoring kit too early, but c'est la vie - it's fun and I'm getting stronger even doing everything "wrong."

Am I ready for this kind of programming? Not by the standards here, and I don't eat enough. But no matter what level of advancement you have to program like this to be good at lifting in kit. I spent a lot of the year ggetting good at this and not much of the year getting strong, but I pulled 501 in a belt and a singlet at the Worlds so I'm getting better.

*For deadlift training for a meet, you need to watch Andy Bolton's DVD. My training was very similar (except with pretty much all the weights halved ;)). Some basic adjustments can be made for how much of a novice you are - novices can handle more work on top of the basic deadlift cycle because the weights are lighter.

that's awesome. I may check out that Andy Bolton DVD. Pulling off the floor is my strongest lift--monkey-ass arms with average height helps. This year I want to compete just for the f of it.

How long have you been competing?

BTW, 501 pull at any weight is awesome in my book. But to do that at like 180 pounds is freaking awesome.

George Noble
01-09-2010, 10:14 PM
First competition was September 21st 2008, weighed in at 72.2 kg and totalled 410 (sorry for lack of conversions, it's 4am here and I can't be arsed). As a caveat to my weighing in at 180, I cut from about 190 I think. Competing just for the F of it is a brilliant idea.

Did a bit of benchin'.

Dumbbells (wt = total, not each hand):
88 x 8
110 x 8
143 x 12
143 x 10
165 x 6
165 x 6
set of 12 and both sets of 6 are PBs I think. Not great but not bad considering I haven't trained bench properly since Xmas day.

Smith overhead press
110 x 12
wider grip
110 x 14
110 x 8

Lat pulldowns
2x15, then went heavy and did a set of 6 and a set of 8 I think

Curls
a few sets of 8 on the cable machine

CGBP type extension thing (like a JM press I suppose)
132 x 10
132 x 7

Bashed the heavy bag at the end for some light GPP.

Also during this session I learned the rate equation for enzymes with 2 substrates

v = ........................Vmax
...... ----------------------------------------
...... 1 + KmAx/[Ax] + KmB/[B] + KmAB/[Ax][B]

Bitchin'.

Exam tomorrow and then another one on Friday so probably no training for a while unless the other one turns out to be really easy looking.

Exam. What I learnt yesterday didn't come up. Fuck. Made up some biochemistry though which should be OK as I'm pretty creative for a scientist. I know some stuff about proteins and some stuff about kinetics so I wrote that. Should be OK. Anyways..

Squat!! Wow!
132 x 10
176 x 5
220 x 3
264 x 1
belt
308 x 1
352 x 4 @ 8.5
396 x 1 @ 9
wraps
440 x 0 lol absolute abortion of an attempt. Didn't even come close.

Concentric puss pad good mornings
132 x 10
154 x 10
fucking hard, especially on abs. Time to stop calling it a puss pad.

RPE makes me feel cool but today was basically a waste of ammonia.

Hip felt absolutely fine so no need to get hopped up on deca.

Experimenting with different grips. Shirt competition grip is too wide, raw training grip is either OK or too narrow. I think my old raw grip from before I got a shirt is the way forward. Even so, not sure what the deal was with the crappy strength. Loads of small things adding up I guess. I should bench 264 in competition at least.

A nice little workout today

DB press:
44 x 10
110 x 5
165 x 8
165 x 8
165 x 7
personal best before was 165 x 6 x 2sets. Granted that was after repping with a lighter weight but still, this is good. Still no wrist wraps because I forgot them.

JM press:
88 x 10 x 5sets

Chin grip pulldowns:
5x10

Curls:
3x10

Barbell curls wreck my wrists. I am very weak at this and could barely curl 88 lbs for reps

George Noble

I've had an interesting little pain in my right shoulder since the deadlift session. Doesn't affect anything I did today but it does hurt like hell to lift the weight of my arm (granted, that's a shitload of weight) in certain ways. I'm not really asking for advice because like I say it doesn't affect lifting. Just thought it was interesting. Some sort of RC strain I'm guessing.

George Noble

Really weird day. I got out of bed at 12 to watch PMQs, went back to bed and basically couldn't get up again until 2:30. No idea why I was so tired.

Anyway in the gym my shoulders were too tight to get a good grip and my hip was giving me grief even though I had to wait for the rack for 10 minutes and warmed up thoroughly. Every set seemed hard. Anyway here is what I did.

squat
132 x 8
176 x 5
belt
220 x 5
264 x 1
308 x 1
330 x 6
belt off
220 x 5

Low appetite, niggling injuries for no reason, tiredness for no reason. Maybe lack of recovery brought on by exam stress but I don't feel/act very stressed. When normal people get stressed they start worrying and doing more work.

Anyway I'll probably take a few days off lifting (spend them drinking instead), then carry on where I left off WRT benching. Deadlift I probably need to rotate away from heavy floor pulling for a couple of weeks to avoid stagnation if it's like this although I am enjoying it so I'll see how I feel. As for squat I'll just wing it.

George Noble
01-23-2010, 03:42 PM
Bench
44 x 10
44 x 5
132 x 5
176 x 3
198 x 4
198 x 7 1 rep personal best I think. 3 more reps and the calculator will say I can have 264.

Triceps 5x10
Curls 5x10
Neck flexion with 25 kg plate 3x10

I used 14 kg dumbbells for the curls. A while ago I read a quote that was along the lines of "how can you say you're strong if you can't curl even though every other douchebag can?" It's true. I can barely curl the empty bar so how am I strong even if I pull 500? Another thing: how can I be big if my arms are under 15".

Good night out last night as I got drunk and threatened violence. As usual I am too cool for hangovers so my strength wasn't really affected.

Hangover wasn't too bad and I escaped with a bottle opening injury on my right hand, an orange juice carton opening injury on my left hand and the rather tender imprint of a set of teeth on my leg.

I didn't have much energy though so I just stuck to my main assistance exercises and did some abs while I was waiting for the bench.

Barbell row
all sets of 8
132
176
220
242
242
220

4x10 kneeling ab roller. I was going to do 5x10 but I felt a strong burn on about the seventh rep of the last set so I finished that off and stopped. Ab exercises with a significant negative seem to give all the CF kids rhabdo and I did drink quite a lot. Not enough to program like Assman though. Ha har.

Geoff - I quite agree. With that said my preferred form of courtship is along the lines of "I like your leg so I will stroke it seductively" as opposed to "I like your leg so I will do my utmost to take a chunk of it home with me."

But beggars can't be choosers.

I just got back from a meal in which one of my friends cooked the most spectacular, gorgeous tasting ham I have ever had. I don't even like ham that much and I'd say it's among my least favourite meat, but I could have eaten the whole thing. I will try and get a recipe video type thing up so that the faithful followers of my log can get their due.

Seriously every day you go without this stuff is a wasted day of your life.

Another interesting irony: on Iron Addict's site there's a movement to get bodybuilders to train like powerlifters and elsewhere in the actual powerlifting community there are guys who think novice powerlifters should train like bodybuilders to get big enough to lift some weight. What?

Could you elaborate on this please? Just curious.

George Noble
02-01-2010, 04:35 PM
I'm not sure how much I can elaborate on it, but Matt Rhodes posted a novice training article talking about using higher reps because novices are too small. I couldn't find it to link to it but it was on Elite. Also DE gets replaced by RE in novice WSB style templates (like DeFranco's) for the same reason. I wasn't trying to make a point, I just thought it was interesting. And nobody really advocates the typical magazine style BB 5 day split routine.

Maybe I did. I think most people were healthily skeptical about it and if they weren't, they should have been. I'm still not sure about going really heavy all the time. I wouldn't train in gear like this and I don't deadlift that frequently. But I think their point about overtraining being highly overstated has been proven to me.

Even Broz said not to train the deadlift frequently at all - he said that speed reps at maybe 80% for 2x3 would be the highest he'd generally go.

The Olympic lifts, having no eccentric phase, are easier to recover from. Maybe you can remove the eccentric phase on as much lifts as you can, like rows and overhead work?

I've never heard anyone call marijuana gear. We just call it weed like everyone else. We call steroids gear, and from watching movies I think drug dealers use that word for just about anything. We also use kit and gear interchangably for equipment.

Usually I am a kit/gear whore and my raw numbers are comparitively crap. I'll probably squat around 440 which is nothing special but in the WPC I've done 630. I'm taking some time off wearing anything but a belt so that I can get to a point where I'm actually strong, and give my back a bit of a rest since it was feeling a bit older than 20 after a year of 4 equipped competitions.

Are you calling me gay or telling me I smoke cigarettes? I'm confused.

Anyhow, short workout today

88 lb. dumbbells for 2x8, backed off with the 55s for 10, 10, 8, 6

Triceps I did 30 pushdowns then 20 with a bit more weight. Big day in the gym tomorrow as I will take my deadlift opener and shore up all the relevant weak points.

When and what is your next meet?

George Noble
02-16-2010, 05:32 PM
Think it's on the 28th, in the Maidenhead Windsor Ascot area, wherever that is. There is practically no information. I know who is lifting and I know we're lifting raw+wraps out of a monolift but that's it.

Sami

Are you lifting with Andy B? Is it the same venue for the 1008lb pull?

George Noble
02-16-2010, 06:01 PM
No it's not a BPC comp. Andy is injured or recovering from an injury at the moment I think and doesn't lift raw anyway.

Well, if you do go around telling people you're an aspiring shirtlifter... ;)

George Noble
02-17-2010, 01:31 PM
Yep, and I even practise lifting so I can lift the heavy ones :(

Deadlift
132 x 5
132 x 3
220 x 3
308 x 1
belt
396 x 1
440 x 1
506 x 1
396 x 3
everything was a bit harder than I thought. Oh well should be easier after some rest.

Hamstrings biceps and grip work after. I beat my friend in a grip competition in three stages.

First we did one hand hang on the pullup bar, last man standing. I beat him when he was holding with his right hand and I was holding with my left hand, and he beat me the other way round so that was a draw (strange since we both claim to be right handed). Then we did deadlifts with only our first two fingers with 90 kg. That was more painful than hard and we both only got six reps. Tie breaker was last man standing 2 hand plate pinch which I won but only just. Still a victory is a victory.

So far it's
George 3 (deadlifts, grip, ab roller)
Matt 2 (rear delts, yes/no machine)

George Noble
02-20-2010, 08:00 PM
Uuuuuh

incline press 132 5x10
lat pulldown thing 5x10
Face pulls 2x25
Rear delts 2x5
Dips 3x10

I wish I'd done like one training session in the last month or so when I wasn't exhausted.

Raw lifts video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roV9JksprX0

A few bad things I did:
bad training - not enough rows
all day all I ate was three little burritos, some cereal and a lucozade. Probably barely over 1000 calories
not getting enough rest in my last week out because I left all my lab work until that week

I'm in lectures and don't have a decent signal for youtube; what were your lifts?
(very boring lecture, GABA sucks)

Sami, watch the youtube videos with sound as soon as you can. You won't be disappointed.

Very solid bench presses, George, particularly the last one. Wish we could have seen your squats. Nice work.

Sami

Nice 'tunes'.

Solid lifts George. Are these raw PR's?

George Noble
03-01-2010, 10:43 AM
Bench was a PR the other two were equal to gym PRs. Those were just the default tunes that Big D played. I don't really care what's playing because I can't hear it when I'm lifting anyway so I don't request anything. Wait until you see Matt's videos (assuming someone took some).

Squats weren't very exciting to be honest. I passed my third because I wanted a good deadlift but that never happened. Ah well. I'll probably do a strongman meet in April or May if they do under 90 kg events again.

I don't think Matt's is getting posted. Is this Matt Griffiths we're talking about? If so, what did he do?

George Noble
03-05-2010, 01:52 PM
Yes. He did a 195 bench press with Top Cat playing. Injured knee so nothing else.

Since the competition I did a session on Wednesday, some squats with 264 and triceps, then today I did 176 push press for 4 and backed off with 132 x 10. Then shrugs, then deficit SLDL 308 x 10, then abs. On Wednesday I also rowed 500m in 1:32 on the C2 with resistance at 10.

Plan for strongman is this:

Maintain weight while leaning down by doing a better diet.

Routine based around:
5 main exercises
squat variation
deadlift variation
push press
incline press
barbell row

assistance
pulldowns
abs
curls
JM press
DB bench
some sort of cleans

Aim to do all of the main exercises every week and as much assistance as I can fit in. Simple.

My friend turned up late to the gym today and suggested we did the deadlift challenge which was first on IGx and is making its way round the internet. 315 deadlift max reps in 30 minutes. We used 308 because we are vaginas.

I did 100, Matt did 107. 3 each on the challenges I believe.

Today was a good day because I got back into kit whoring with my Katana. I am ashamed to say I can get into this shirt without slippers or plastic bags and without fat guys helping me. I should gain weight but I'd rather have fun.

I worked up to 286 to a 1 board against doubled minis. Estimated ~350 at the top, probably somewhere in the low 3s at the bottom. Then I missed 308 bar weight but it was quite close. I was training with a guy who normally trains with a Westside guy. He was all TUCK TUCK TUCK TUCK TUCK and I was like TAKE IT. It was hilarious, and I felt like a proper American powerlifter. I did some other stuff in the gym and then I went home to eat steak and not shave my goatee.

Back in business.

Pressed 176 and missed 181, both strict and in a belt, no sleeves or wraps.

Want to get this up into the 200s pretty soon.

Reverse hypers on the preacher curl bench. Westside.

What in the hell is going on here? Why'd you stop posting?

George Noble
05-20-2011, 07:01 PM
I will never keep this up to date, but whatever.

Today I deadlifted 170 for 3 doubles, then 180 for 1, then put on my belt and did singles with 190, 200 and 210. That is the kind of thing my deadlift training is like now. After this I did some sort of agility stuff and went home.

I'm bored of training so tomorrow I will do Z presses if I get up in time. Sunday I might play football. Monday I will look for a job so I can play football all summer instead of relying on Z presses to keep me entertained.

George Noble
05-21-2011, 02:07 PM
Did Z presses with 60 kg, 2 sets of 5, 3 sets of 3. Supersetted with bicep curls to save some time, had to go to a wedding.

Football yesterday, didn't really do much but the gym is only open for 2 hours so I couldn't work out even though I could have.

Today front squatted 160 in a belt with KB swings in between, down set of 140x2. I did sets of 10 with the 20 kg bell against a small band. Then the gym was crowded so I did some dynamic press ups and regular pullups after but not really much.

George Noble
05-24-2011, 10:01 AM
Power clean and push press, using 25 kg plates so didn't warm up too well. 70 for a couple of trips, then 80 for a double i think, then 85 also doubled, then 90 missed twice, got on third attempt. Need to clean more.

Changed my push press start position and did 100x3 and 105x2 out the rack.

Then L-pullups for 2x5 (very hard), band resisted dips for 2x8 and some agility thing for 2x10 in a circuit.

George Noble
05-25-2011, 04:41 PM
Did bench pressing but it didn't go well. I guess it was the third day in a row training triceps so whatever. I did 102.5 for 2x3, then 90 for 2x5. According to the calculator this means my push press is only 1 kg away from my bench. Strict barbell rows 5x5 with 90. Then Z presses, 60x3 and 65x3 and I couldn't be arsed so I went home.

Later I played football, still not getting any plays on offense so I went in at DT. Fun but way more tiring than the fat guys on TV make it look.
