....... so i filmed a few sets on my canon ixus digital camera and the minute long video is liek 100mb. now i could upload that on youtube via my 256kbit adsl upstream but that would take a long fucking time. so i put the question to the members of SSF what do you do to preprocess your videos before uploading?
does anyone use vlc? what about linux?

Plenty of free software that you can use to compress the video. I use virtualdub http://www.virtualdub.org/ , its pretty straightforward:
- Open the file
- in the video menu click full processing mode
- Video menu again, goto "compression" and pick a codec (xvid or divx will make it pretty small).
- Goto file and click save as avi, give it a name.
- Upload.
You can also use the little pointy arrows on the right of the bottom toolbar to select the part of the video you want and remove unneccesary parts.. Good walkthrough for that here:

I've used any video converter before I think. My hard drive died not too long ago and I don't have it installed on this one. It was easy to use, just load the files you want converted, select the destination format from a pulldown, and hit go.
I used it to quickly turn .avi to .wmv because for some reason the .avi from my flip would crash Premiere Elements regularly.
I'm going to check out the vdub as I don't have anything installed on this hd yet.

Great thread. I borrowed a digital video camera to take videos to put on
Youtube for analysis.
The camera only records to a mini DVD disc. The file name is .VOB.
Does anyone know how I can get this file off the DVD and onto my hard drive
and converted to a format that will work with Youtube?
I have checked with the two programs above and neither look like they will
perform this task.

I don't claim to have any experience converting from dvd using virtualdub, but I found this guide with a quick google search that seems reasonable.

I wouldn't mind knowing if this works if you feel like giving it a try and letting us know. Don't have any dvds to try it myself.

I use mencoder so rarely that i do not remember arguments. I just google and read docs before using it and usually i have found out right arguments within ~5 minutes.
