View Full Version : calories in a whole chicken?

I've been doing my best to increase my food intake of late. On average, I'm eating about 1 and 1/2 5-lb chickens and about 20 whole eggs per day (some veggies too, but they don't really count when it comes to calories).
Anyway, it's pretty easy to calculate
20 eggs * 75 cal / egg = 1,500 cal.
But, I have no idea to figure out how many calories are in a whole chicken. For simplicity, if I were to assume a chicken is all protein then
7.25 lbs = 3300 g
3300 g * 4 cal/g = 13,200 cal.
Obviously, I'm not packing in 13,200 cal/day. So, there has to be a lot of water weight in the chicken. I just have no idea how much.
By the way, I also eat beef and pork. But, my economic resources are tight. And chicken is about $1/lb where I live. Also, I prefer to eat multiple generations at once (chicken omelet anyone?). And veal and lamb just are not in my budget.
2,000-2,500 ish.
Make sure you're eating the marrow. That's the secret to growing.

Do you have to chase the chicken around first?

Actually, I do eat the marrow. I normally throw a chicken in the crock-pot in the morning before I leave for work. When I come home, the bones are soft enough to eat. Best part of the chicken.

Your hardcore, someone like me could learn of someone like you.
I have issues eating so many animals though and eggs are expensive where I am.
You should do some pictures of your meals and send them to 70's big. Im intrigued at how you manage to eat the 20eggs. Is it all in one meal? or 10 at a time?
Im looking into getting my own egg laying hens, hopefully then I can eat some more eggs.

Yes, eggs can be expensive depending on where you live. When I was in MN, I never paid more than a buck a dozen. When I moved to CA, I was surprised to see them going for 3 to 4 dollars per dozen. But, there are a few ways to get around that
1. If there's a costco near you, get the 60-pack of eggs (or two).
2. If you live near a farmer's market, see if you can bargain for a better price. I negotiated the price of a dozen eggs down from 4 to 2 bucks because I buy about 12 dozen eggs per week.
3. Check out your local ethnic foods store. The mexican grocer near me sells eggs for $1/dozen.
A friend of mine tried your idea of getting a egg-laying hen. He fed it flax seed. Best eggs I've tasted. But, unless you're going to start a small farming operation, you're not going to get 20 eggs per day.
I don't eat 20 eggs in one meal. I normally eat eggs 4 to 5 times a day. And, depending on how hungry I am, I eat anywhere from 3 to 6 eggs at a time.
Frankly, I don't know how anyone could get tired of eating eggs. They're so damn tasty, and you can cook them many different ways.

Eggs here cost around $2 for six, and can be double that if you get fancy organic sort.
I never used to eat eggs before I started strength training, I never liked the taste, texture and had additionally had a childhood phobia of them because I was force fed eggs as a toddler.
But I learned to like them now. However I can only eat them scrambled or hardboiled. Preferably scrambled. Any other way kind of makes me gag.
Im currently eating only two per day, which is bareley a snack by your standards but is a lot for me both because they are kind of expensive and because I only just learned to like them.
If I had hens I could maybe get 5 per day, which would be an increase!

3 to 6 eggs, 5 times a day would surely dominate your meals? How do you find time to eat things like whole chickens on top of that.

I'm a physics graduate student. So, my time is basically my own. I spend most of my day nibbling on food at my desk while I fiddle with equations.
