Rip,

You sound like a man who enjoys great whiskey. What are your ol' trusty's? Gentleman Jack?

Cheers.

I don't buy from Jack Daniels. We've been investigating the smaller Bardstown distilleries recently. I am impressed with Van Winkle, Michter's, and Black Maple Hill, a big fan of the rye whiskeys.

Two I forgot to mention on the good (but not insanely priced) bourbons, both Bardstown of course.

Corner Creek - cheap in KY, good rye content

Pure Kentucky XO

I just finished a bottle of Corner Creek. Not that impressed. Haven't seen the other one.

I wasn't particularly clear in my previous post, Corner Creek doesn't belong in the same category as BMH or the Van Winkles. A step down, more likely two. Its a budget go-to, along with Bulliet. Pure Kentucky is a pain in the ass to get a hold of.

Please be reminded of the possibility of becoming a connoisseur of collectible bottles and insulators.

Sounds like I've got some taste testing to do.

Ever venture into Canadian whiskeys? My personal fav is Forty Creek, but I also enjoy Canadian Club's older offerings and Crown Royal.

I tried the Forty Creek a while back, as I had heard good things. I found it rather sweet. A bit much for me. The quality of the flavor was good otherwise, but it was almost like drinking port, which is fine if I'm drinking port, but whisky, not so much.

Curious to know what some of the OP's faves are, since he started the thread. Besides the inexpensive bourbon recommendations, I mean.

Sweetness (read that syrupiness) has always been my problem with Canadian whiskeys. Don't shoot me, but I'm starting to think the same thing of Woodford. And I'm from the South - home of sweet everything...

Maybe the Canadians are aging their whiskey in maple syrup casks or something. Maybe Woodford has too much praline in the mash bill. I've never tried it, but always heard it was pretty good.

Ever tried Rock Hill Farms bourbon? I haven't had a ton of high-quality bourbons, but that stuff rocked my world.

Interesting take on the Canadian whiskey. I suppose I became partial to sweeter liquor since dipping my finger in dad's B&B as a child :)

Just to be clear, we're talking about sipping straight up here, right? I mean, the only thing you'd ever mix with whiskey is ice and that depends on the whiskey. Rye&Coke or Rye&Ginger is just not my thing unless I'm making a point of pouring as much of it down my throat as i can.

I've never had it. Don't think I've ever seen it, but I'll keep an eye out. I am looking for a decent rye. Rittenhouse has been sold out for almost a year here in TN. Still can't get the Deadlift IPA either...

Straight up, yo. Crown-n-coke is big down here, but it just makes the drink even more sweet. I used to be a big whiskey snob and had to drink it straight; now I just like to sit back and have it over ice. But yes it still depends on the whiskey.
